Intent

Music is a unique way of communicating that can inspire and motivate children. It is a vehicle for personal expression and it can play an important part in personal development. We understand that music reflects the culture and society we live in, and so the teaching and learning of music enables children to better understand the world they live in. We want our pupils to understand that besides being a creative and enjoyable activity, music can also be a highly academic and demanding subject. It also plays an important part in helping children feel part of a community. We provide opportunities for all children to create, play, perform and enjoy music, to develop the skills to appreciate a wide variety of musical forms, and to begin to make judgements about the quality of music.

Implementation

At Langmoor, our pupils are taught through a scheme of work developed by The Leicester-Shire Schools Music Service (LSMS). This scheme was developed with teachers for teachers, so that those who are non-specialist feel confident and have the resources they need to deliver a music curriculum confidently.

It is taught through a series of lessons, within a unit of work. These units are based on key musical elements which are built on progressively as the pupils move from EYFS to KS1 and KS2.

  1. Rhythm and Pulse
  2. Voice
  3. Rhythm
  4. Pitch
  5. Technology, Structure and form
  6. 20th Century Music

Music Curriculum Map

Our pupils are given the opportunity to study a musical instrument through the Whole Class Ensemble Teaching commissioned from Leicester-Shire Music Service in Y3. Children are encouraged and given the opportunity to continue following their first year of tuition. Instruments are available to loan free from the Leicester-Shire Music Service.

All pupils sing and develop their vocal skills in a weekly singing assembly fostering that sense of community.

We provide cross curricular music opportunities: Forest School, PSHCE, Art, PE

Celebrate successes in music using the school rewards systems- Golden Book certificates etc.

Impact

Pupils at Langmoor enjoy Music, the pupil voice plays a big role when assessing their progress. Children demonstrate a broad understanding of music and great ‘Values’. This shows us that the value of music is promoted as subject in the curriculum and that pupils understand it’s relevance and importance to other curriculum subjects and to their lives outside of school. The impact is often recorded and evidenced by staff with pictures or videos which are in units and year group files on Share Point.

Please see the documents below that show the whole school overview and vocabulary progression.
